November 11, 2018 marks a very important day in the history of Canada and the history of the world – the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice to end the First World War. The war was devastating in its consequences for Canadian families and did not distinguish between the battlefield and home, young and old, Catholic and non-Catholic. To mark this important occasion and to encourage all Canadians to reflect on the loss of life and sacrifices made by soldiers and their families, the Royal Canadian Legion is inviting churches/houses of worship across the country to participate in the ringing of church bells at sunset on November 11, 2018. Specifically, those participating are invited to:
- toll their bells 100 times with 5 seconds between tolls;
- start ringing at sunset 4:35 pm on November 11, 2018
- engage youth in the community to be a part of the bell ringing process, wherever possible;
For your information , please find attached to this email, in English and French, a document from the Royal Canadian Legion outlining the details of this initiative.
The CCCB will post this same information on its website and will also provide a commemorative document, which features correspondence, statements and other texts from diocesan archives on the pastoral support offered by Bishops across the country to those serving in the First World War.
